10/29- Varsity Boys Soccer @ Parker:Our home game at Devens on one of the better fields around. No visible water or mud on the field. Our usual team of 10 were slow to start off which allowed two goals for Parker Charter but they worked hard and were able to score before the end of the first half by Guerin Lovett. Julio Rodriquez made some excellent saves to keep us in the game but Parker Charter was to much and added two more goals in the second half. Final Result Parker Charter 4-1.
10/29 Varsity Girls Soccer @ Parker: Our last home away game. We did start the afternoon with one sub. Something we haven’t seen in quite awhile. Unfortunately we got off to a slow start which allowed Parker to grab two goals in the first 3 minutes. From there the Murdock girls started marking better and generating offense attack. Parker got a third before Murdock put together a run with Gabby sending a long ball over the defense that found Maria who side stepped the keeper and passed e ball into the side panel for the score.
Second half was well played by seniors Kaileen, Izaria and Maria. They kept pushing for another goal but couldn’t quite get there. Game ended 4-1 Parker. Players of the match wnet to Makenzie, Maria, Izaria and Kaileen.
We ended the year 1-15-2 but had smiles on their faces and pride in themselves.
10/26 Varsity Girl Soccer @ The Winchendon School vs Parker: Home away from home paid off. Flat and non muddy. We fielded 11 as did a short handed Nashoba Tech Team. Murdock jumped out in front in the 4th minute when Kaileen made a throw in that found Maria who then beat the keeper. Nashoba Tech countered in the 10th minute with a break away that just squeaked by Cassidy in net. Murdock upped the pressure and were rewarded when Jayla made a nice long though ball in the 14tb minute that found Maria who then worked her magic and grabbed her second goal. Ten minutes later Jayla hit Maria again for an insurance goal.
With Murdock out in front, Izaria swapped out from sweeper to forward with Maria. Izaria had several close (and some not so close) shots on net. I’m addition, Jayla had a few good looks on net. Kara made several end to end runs with the ball and almost scored. Kaileen was excellent on offense, Gabby and Ari on defense. Thankfully Cassidy had little to do for most of game. After her theee goals, Maria played lock down defense to help seal the victory.
The player of match as decided by the players was Kaliegh who, as Mackenzie said from the bench, was on fire. She won nearly every loose ball in the middle of the field, had a few scoring chances and worked hard all game.
Final 3-1 Murdock
Goals Murdock

10/26 Varsity Boys Soccer @ North Brookfield: What a scenic ride to the other side of the mountain to play North Brookfield on a school day off for Murdock. As in the first game, the teams are equal and it showed in the first half with a 0-0 tie. Excellent defense by Aaron MacFarlane, Cole Patterson, Josh Berrospe, Brimhall Maclean, Jeremiah Godsoe and Julio Rodriquez in Net. Even though Murdock only had 10 players, they were able to hold off North Brookfield with 3 goals and Brimhall Maclean scored one as well by weaving thru the defense.
Final 3-1 North Brookfield.
10/24- Varsity Girls Soccer @ West Boylston: A blustery day kept the bench cold. Good thing there were no players sitting on the bench. At kick off the Murdville 8 took the pitch to face off with WB 11. It was an uphill and upwind effort. WB pushed up and capitalized in white extra players and staked themselves to a 3 goal lead with 12 minutes. At this point WB pulled off 3 to even the field to 8 a side.
During the half, Cassidy made several quality saves and Gabby helped keep a few more from crossing the line.
Second half had WB tallying two more in the first 5 minutes. With WB pushing up, a few opportunities opened up for Murdock and with a series of well placed passes, Summer threaded a pass to Maria who easily got around the keeper for the score. WB got one more to round end the scoring at 6-1.
Player of Match went to Gabby for her outstanding defense all over the field.
10/23 Varsity Girls Soccer @ Nashoba Tech: With an early shower to clean off the field, Murdock got to it and met our first challenge of not letting the opponent score in the first 5 minutes. In fact we did the opposite as Maria scored at 4:36. They held that lead for the next 15 minutes. Nashoba scores 2 goals before the break. Sadly the girls were not fully ready for he next half as they let up a goal 26 seconds into the half. And then grabbed their 4th of the match 5 minutes later. A quick regrouping has Kaileen sending the ball up to Maria who then out ran the entire defense and deftly, yes deftly side stepped the keeper and tapped in her second is the game. Momentum was definitely on our side and we were closing in on our next opportunity when with a flash of lightening, literally lightening, the game was halted with 10 minutes to go. A quick huddle with the officials and we opted to end the game in the name of safety. The 10 Murdock players were pumped and are definitely going to be ready for the rematch on Friday. Izaria fought all game to hold off puking and played very well inspite of her discomfort. Katrina played aggressive defense and Jayla and Kara duplicated their effort from yesterday. Player of Match was Maria for her all around play.
10/22- Varsity Girls Soccer @ Gansett: Hit the field looking at 8-8. Gabby stepped up to play net for the first half for out understaffed line up. She played tough but Gansett still scored early. Kaliegh played another strong game in the middle of the field. Katrina and Ari put in a strong effort on defense. Jaiya and Trinity rounded out the midfield. Jalay and a Katelynn did a great job hounding the defense and nearly connected on a couple of offensive break outs. The shortened half needed 5-0.
Kaliegh took a turn in net and after a couple wake up shots, she did alright. She even made a save on a penalty kick.
Final score 9-0 with player of match going to Katelyn for her eagerness to play and her fight while on the field.
10/19- Varsity Girls Soccer @ Parker: Hit the field with 10 and backup to the backup goalie. The girls didn’t let that bring them down as the pulled together to defend the net. Gabby in her first go at playing keeper did well making several saves and delivering some defensive relief with her punts out of our end. Parker kept up the pressure and score four goals in the half.
Second half had Maria in net and he team continued to work hard at defending. Several times Jayla tried to break out offensively moving deep into enemy territory. Parker got 2 more goals to round out the time shortened half to end 6-0.
Katrina, Kaileen and Izaria all played well defensively as a unit. Dual player of Match went to Gabby and Jayla.
10/18 Girls Varsity Soccer @ Fitchburg: Another tuff outing tonight in the wind and cold at Crocker field. The girls came out a little flat and Fitchburg jumped out to an early lead (25 seconds in). They would add to that several times aided by some questionable non-calls by the officials. Lots of grabbing, pulling and hip checking. Really took the girls out of sync all game. With some negotiating with the officials to take control of the play, the girls were awarded a penalty kick when Gabby was taken down in the box. Her teammates told her to take the PK and she put it in back of the net.
The have time break had a 7-1 advantage for Fitchburg. The Caprains stepped up during the half time huddle and demanded better play, more aggressive to lose balls and better marking up in defense. The second half was a better showing for sure. Summer took a throw in and found Maria down the side line and Maria was able to beat the keeper on the short side. Fitchburg would add one as well and the game ended with an 8-2 score in favor of Fitchburg. Jaiya Warner player of Match for her game long effort of running down the ball and making the opponent work to get open.
10/18 Boys Varsity Soccer @ Fitchburg: Senior Night for Fitchburg at Crocker Field with temps at around 40 degs under the lights. The boys had only 8 players and the fitchburg played evenly the whole game. It was appreciated by the Murdock players. Even though it was 7-1 Fitchburg at the half, Murdock still worked hard with the defensive play of MacLean Brimhall, Josh Berrospe, Cole Patterson and Julio Rodriquez in goal. The lone goal was made by Josh Berrospe on a direct kick from 25 yards out. It sailed high over the goalies hands. In the second half, Murdock was possessing the ball more and getting opportunities on the net. The 2nd chance for a goal was a Penalty Kick taken by MacLean Brimhall. He made good contact but the goalie blocked it and provided a rebound for Maclean to shoot a second time but it went wide. The Final Score was 10-1 Fitchburg.
10/15 Varsity Boys Soccer @ Tahanto: Game 2 against Tahanto within 4 days. The 2nd game was a good battle in the first half with all 10 Murdock players working hard. Tahanto was first on the board at 11 and 22 minute. Murdock did not lose faith and scored at the 27min with Adam Digman gathering the ball after an errant pass by Tahanto. Julio Rodriquez stepped up again in net to provide some good saves. The 1st half finished with a 2-1 score. The boys were excited by their play and teamwork in the first half. The second half was a different story with Tahanto scoring 5 goals at different points. The Final Score 7-1.
10/15 Varsity Girls Soccer @ Tahanto: An interesting match considering we played 7-7. Lots of open space. Cassidy made some big saves early on but the ball was surely bouncing Tahanto’s way as rebound found the attacking team for the scores. 7-0 at the shortened first half. Swapping around goalies had Izaria take a turn in net. Played well. Maria played some net late as well. Gabby worked hard as she could without cleats. Ari and Kaileen played well. Player or match goes to Cassidy for her extended effort in the field. Final score I think was 12-0.
10/12 Varsity Boys Soccer vs Tahanto: With a blustery afternoon and a still soggy field, the Murdock boys took the field to face Tahanto. With 10 on the field the boys got to work. Tahanto got on the board early in the 4th minute. Then Murdock found its defensive groove and kept Tahanto at bay fending off attacks. Cole and Napoleon blazed well at defense and Jamieson worked hard at center midfield making several aggressive plays. The offense struggled but Guerin and Adam manufactured a few quality chances.
Fatigue set in and Tahanto capitalized scoring 3 goals in 8 minutes to wind down the half.
After the break Murdock regrouped it’s effort and played a good half. Tahanto got two more scores in the second half. The match ended with Tahanto 6 and Murdock 0.
Next up, Tahanto again.
10/10- Varsity Boys Soccer vs Trivium:Warm and Humid day. Murodck Boys played with 11 today but their third game in a row. They exerted a lot of energy in yesterdays game so they did not have much time to recover. They played a good team in Trivium. Even though Trivium scored 7 goals in the first half, the team did not get down on each other and totally stop playing. They were able to score their first goal of the game in the second half. It was a corner kick by Adam Digman and put into the net by Gavin Stocking at 7:17, The team worked hard the rest of the 2nd half. Adam Digman worked hard at 24:25 and was able to put a shot pass the keeper. The combination of Julio Rodriquez and Josh Berrospe in goalie tallied 7 saves for the game. There was some good combination and defensive play from all players on the team during different times of the game where we were able to keep possession. The Final Score Trivium 10 - Murdock 2.
10/10- Varsity Girls Soccer vs Trivium: In a rare turn of events, Murdock was on the board first when Maria sent a harmless shot in on the keeper that found a way to trickle through to he back of the net in the 8th minute. This lead was short life however as Trivium came right back with the equalizer less than a minute later. Trivium carried the play for most of the half but were held in check by Cassidy in net and Gabby at sweeper and Kaileen at stopper. Trivium would take the lead just past the mid point of the half and hold that advantage into the break.
Second half Murdock had more of equal time with possession and had a few chances to try to tie the game. Trivium scored its third in the 61st minute as Rose Doyle completed her hat trick. Murdock didn’t give up and earned a PK which Maria skillfully deposited in the net with 9 minutes to play. Maria made several quality passes to teammates that came close. Kaliegh has a chance, Kaileen as well. The best chance came when the centering pass found Summer just outside the six yard box. Her strike went wide right. As time wound down Murdock pushed for the equalizer but came up just short.
Player of the match went to Katrina for playing intense defense during the second half. Ari and Shannon did an outstanding job on defense all night. Lexi, Trinity and Kaliegh played hard all fame at midfield. Jayla and Kara has several quality offensive and defensive players.
10/9- Varsity Boys Soccer vs. North Brookfield: On a 70 degree day in October, Murdock Boys played the game with 10 players. Murdock played well to keep a good North Brookfield to one goal at 32:34 in the first half. The first half was filled with many shots by both teams and good saves by both goalies. Julio Rodriquez stood tall and made some excellent saves. Providing support for Julio on defense was Cole Patterson, Adam Digman, Aaron MacFarlane and Jeremiah Godsoe. They were able to hold off the North Brookfield offensive threat in the first half. The second half continued with a back and forth of offense and defense. North Brookfield added another goal at 4:09, The Murdock boys held strong and continued to play as a team to put one in the net at 31:05. The goal was scored by Guerin Lovett after many attempts on the net in both halves. The boys continued to fight and were provided a penalty kick at 38:20 which was scored by MacLean Brimhall. The final score was 2-2. It was an exciting match to watch.
10/8 Boys Soccer vs Sizer: We played with 11 on a rainy Columbus day. The boys started off slow and Sizer took advantage with a few goals. Julio Rodriquez kept them at bay all game with good saves for our team. Even though our game was 30 minute halves, the team worked hard which resulted in our third goal of the season. it was a corner kick from MacLean Brimhall and headed in by Gavin Stocking in the final few minutes. The Final Score was 9 to 1.
10/8 Girls Soccer vs Sizer: Heading into the match, we knew we had a tough task at hand. Played with 9 as that was all we started with. However the nine we had played hard and smart and fought all game long. We did play 30 minute halves, more for the lack of light and not our numbers.
Cassidy kept the team in the the game all night make key saves and getting a fortuitous post save late in the second half. We were not without our chances as Maria made a couple of passes to teammates. Kaliegh had a strong fame and almost pulled off a half field break away for a score. Kaileen made several quality free kicks that almost connected. Summer had one of our best chances to score but just missed her redirect wide of the net.Ari and Shannon did well all fame on the outside defense. Izaria and Gabby were fabulous in the middle of the defense.
Player of the match went to:
Cassidy, Izaria, Gabby, Ari, Shannon, Kaileen, Kaliegh, Summer and Maria.
Final score 0-0
10/4 Girls Soccer vs Ayer: Mudbowl round 2.
With a depleted squad, the girls took to the field and made the best of a muddy situation. The defense held together early, keeping Ayer off the scoreboard for the first 9 minutes. An improvement over letting their opponents score with the first 90 seconds. Cassidy made several saves, Izaria did well directing the defense and Gabby played strong in the center. However, without being able to consistently mount a counter attack to get the ball out of the defensive end, we could not keep Ayer from scoring. The first goal was from the corner of the box that found the back corner in the 9th minute. From their we lost our focus and gave up another tally 60 seconds later. Ayer would grab two more in the next 8 minutes to cruise to a 4-0 half time lead.
Coming out of the gates in the second half Ayer scored 1 minute in and continued to push forcing an own goal by Murdock 2 minutes after that. With the goals against rising, the girls spirit stayed strong and they continued to battle, trying to stick to the game plan. Kaileen and Maria worked well together trying to muster an attack. They were working give and go passing that got us moving in the right direction but was thwarted not by Ayers defense but by the muddy ruts in the field. Ayer would keep their offensive control going and end the evening with an 11-0 advantage.
Playing well at midfield Jaiya and Kaliegh fought hard all game. A late goalie change had Maria between the pipes, allowing Cassidy some time in he field. Players of the match went to Kaileen for her play at several positions and for Ari for a strong showing on defense.
Next up Sizer on Monday.
10/4 Boys Soccer vs Ayer: The boys played a good opponent in Ayer-Shirley today. The field was still recovering from the rain so it was soft and squishy. The 11 players at the game performed to the best of their ability based upon the conditions. They did not give up on each other and played till the last whistle. Adam Digman played goalie for the first 20 minutes and made some good saves and provided punts to midfield for our team to possess. Julio Rodriguez played goalie the rest of the game and positioned himself so the other team had to work hard for their goals. Ayer-Shirley did win the game 8 to 1 but Murdock was able to score their second goal of the season. MacLean Brimhall was able to control ball and put a shot past the goalie in the late minutes of the second half.
XC- After today’s tough loss to Littleton the boys and girls varsity Cross Country teams are now 1-2 each. While the Murdock girls faced defending state champions they held their own. With Freshman Lilly Digman finishing 7th place and newcomer sixth grader Avery Murphy placing 8th.Rounding out Murdock top five were Hanna Demanche, Brooke Zabik and Kaitlyn Tamulen respectively finishing 12th, 13th, and 14th. Even with the defeat the Murdock coaches could highlight individual improvement with Ms. Murphy improving by 44 seconds per mile and Lillian Skawinski improving by 15 seconds per mile for the 3.1 mile course.
On the boys side it was a more competitive match with the boys losing by a few places. Justin Manuel led the devils, finishing 3rd overall, Dylan Lupien placed 5th, Andrew Race in 7th and Timmy Quinn in 8th. Rounding out the devils top 5 was Jason Ingman finishing 10th. The boys’ loss was also highlighted by personal improvements with Mr. Race and Mr. Quinn improving their all-time personal best in the 3.1 mile race. The most significant improvements by the blue devils came from the youth of the team, eighth graders Nicholas LaPlaca, Mark Quinn and sixth graders Gavin Zabik and Mathew Dellmuth, with Dellmuth and M. Quinn improving by 13 seconds per mile each.
This improvement is considerable given that the middle school team won their first meet of the year just the day before. With the boys top five Jason Ingman winning the race, Dominic LeBlanc 4th, Nicholas LaPlaca 5th, Tucker Smith 8th and Gavin Zabik 9th easily sealing the win for them.
On the girls side the lack of depth on the team proved to be their downfall. Avey Murphy finished 2nd, Brooke Zabik 6th and Katelyn Tamulen finishing 10th rounded out their top 10 finishers.
The Middle School Cross Country Team opens it new course on Wednesday October 3rd against Overlook at Ingleside on Maple Street in Winchendon and the High School team will travel to Ayer Shirley on Thursday October 4th.
9/26 Boys Soccer vs Sizer: The boys played a good opponent in Sizer. We started off with our first goal of the season by Adam Digman scoring at 2:45. The boys were excited to get that first goal off their back. The field was still a little soggy which filled the game with players falling in mud, sliding around, playing thru the water and making adjustments on their passes. They held that score until 30 minutes of the first half when sizer tied up the game. Josh Berrospe played goalie in the first half and made some good saves to keep the game tied. The second half was filled with back and forth of both teams trying hard to take possession and move the ball to get some good shots. Both teams worked hard on defense, especially Julio Rodriquez. He made some excellent saves. Sizer did take the lead at 65 minutes on a free kick from the 20 yards out in the top right corner. We had a few more chances but just could not tie up the game. It was a decent effort based upon the muddy field.

Xc- Now with 2 meets in the books the Murdock boys and girls cross country team find themselves 1-1. With the boys winning against Lunenburg and the girls winning against Oakmont. The boys team is being lead in both races by Justin Manuel, Dylan Lupien, Andrew Race, Timmy Quinn, Jason Ingman, Moeketsi Molai and either Dominic LeBlanc or Phillip Quinn.
On the girls side the team is being lead by Lilly Digman, Hanna Demanche, Brooke Zabik, Avery Murphy, Katlyn Tamulen, Nobaleigh Laraba, and either Paige Demanche or Brianna Bouchard.
During today’s tilt against Oakmont the Murdock boys were handily defeated by a much deeper Oakmont team who placed 9 runners in the top 11. Junior Justin Manuel and Senior Dylan Lupien who finished 5th and 6th respectively were Murdock’s top runners for the day.
The Murdock girls on the other hand showed that their depth and youth were formidable. While freshman Lilly Digman was Murdock top runner finishing 2nd, Oakmont placed 3 in the top four. What saved the girls team was taking places 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Placements were by eighth graded Brooke Zabik, junior Hanna Demanche, new comer 6th grader Avery Murphy and 7th grader Kaitlyn Tamulen and freshman Nobaleigh Laraba. The second through fifth runner finished only 2 seconds apart. Laraba who had a difficult race on tough course fell 4 times and still managed to finish the race which was crucial to the girls victory as her 9th place finish overall was good enough to offset Oakmont’s 5th place finisher sealing the win for the devils.
Murdock’s next meet will be on next Thursday September 27th against Littleton.
9/19 Firld Hockey vs Monty Tech- Proud is an understatement for our Lady Devils Field Hockey team tonight! They rocked it and battled to a 4-5 loss, but never gave up. From top to bottom every single player contributed and gave it their all!!!
Also at the end of the game the lead official let us know that we were second place for sportsmanship in the state of Massachusetts for last season! What a honor and a reminder to continue to play hard and strong but above all else be a good human and be a good sport!

Standouts from the game included Kaliegh at center mid, Kaileen for her play at forward, mid and defense, Gabby at sweeper running down their break-aways. Maria did a good job making our offense move forward. The player of the match however went to Cassidy in net, who despite the 8 goals played exceptionally well. She made several outstanding saves all night. Katrina fought a late match scrum in front of the net to get out goal.
9/17 Varsity Girls soccer vs Athol:
Murdock hosted Athol on Monday night. Despite the lopsided score, the Murdock players played hard and gave it their all. Athol was able to get scores early on as they passed well, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Thankfully, many of these were either shut down by the strong play of Izaria and Gabby at sweeper and stopper. Those plays they couldn’t stop, Cassidy put in a strong effort make more the 20 safes throughout the match.
Maria provided a few scoring changes but couldn’t quite beat the keeper. Kaileen and Mackenzie played well on offense, making key passes to help the offense get started. Kaliegh played well at center mid and broke up several of Athol’s midfield possessions.
In the end, Murdock was unable to record a goal and Athol went on to the 8-0 victory. Player of match for Murdock went to Gabby for her tough defense. Izaria was an honorable mention.
Next up is Narragansett away on Wednesday.
Thank you to the Memorial Lil Devils for making all fall sports teams an encouraging poster!

9/6- Murdock Boys Soccer Game Vs Fitchburg:
Weather today delayed match between Fitchburg and Murdock boys soccer.
First of all, it was exciting to watch the girls play first and come from behind to tie.
The boys played a tough and good opponent in Fitchburg. We started off slow because it was our first game as a team and we are getting used to each other's way of playing. Fitchburg won the game 10-0 but our team did not give up. They should be proud that they played the entire game and never gave up. We were successful today with team possession at times and were able to present some offensive threats against Fitchburg. This game is a teaching moment for the players to show what type of work we have to do for the season. I am excited about the growth and development that will occur for each player as we progress thru the season.

2018 Murdock Soccer Marathon
Friday at the Clark YMCA field house, the event got under way at 6 pm with the more than 40 high school and middle school soccer players. Ten minute small sided games were held concurrently to maximize the number of players on the field at one time. Each team rotated in and got a chance to play a match while those waiting were running drills and skills outside. Two hours in, the high schoolers took a break and opened up the field to the Iggy Foot soccer club. Three teams of 10 squares off in a round robin tournament and played six 15 minute matches. The played featured high intensity soccer which entertained the onlookers for the two hour block.
Next up we opened up play to all ages and we were able to mix in Murdock players, alumni of the school, Iggy foot crew and any one else that walked in the door. We played another two hour session, squeezing in another 4 games.
As midnight rolled around, most players were spent and we wrapped up the night, capping off the 6 hours of soccer.
With the more than 80 patcipants, the event raised $910 that will help support the Murdock Soccer programs. A special thanks the Noah Raynor and the Clark YMCA for use of the field house. Without their support, we would have been left in the dark.
Thank you to all that came out and donated. Please come support the teams during the upcoming seasons. We look forward to you cheering on the players!
Sincerely,
Coach Larry (middle school girls)
Coach David (middle school boys)
Coach Jason (varsity girls)
Coach Alex (varsity boys)
